23 Jul 2010While most of us long for an extended break, city life leaves us with fewer options and weekend getaways become the next big thing. Ideal for almost everyone, a weekend getaway can be enhanced to get optimum value for the short time period you have if you plan it right.
Try to opt for smaller places as the chances of them being crowded are lesser. From Delhi, Nainital is a popular weekend choice for many. However, very close to Nainital is Pangot, which is equally beautiful yet not too commercial. It is also a birding hotspot and can be apt for small treks.
Lonavala is the obvious choice for the Mumbai crowd, but a visit to the sun and sand of Kashid would perhaps be more memorable. Most people prefer places that are not more than 3-4 hours away from their city, which is why nearly everyone ends up at the same place. Try to extend your travel time to around 6 hours and you will find a whole new range of options available to you. You can also deviate from the regular place-centric getaway and opt for an activity-centric getaway. A rafting trip at Kolad is an ideal weekend getaway from Mumbai just as Dandeli is from Bangalore.
Sometimes, you only wish to getaway from routine and do absolutely nothing but relax over the weekend. Going for an accommodation- based getaway could be your solution. Farmhouses, homestays and bungalows in the outskirts of your city are perfect for a family getaway or a celebration with friends, wherein you would rather stay in and unwind with them.
