While in Goa, you must sample authentic Goan dishes such as beef roast and pork chilly. There might be little choice for vegetarians in Goa but move into Karnataka and you will find plenty of choices at Udupi, the place where the famous Udupi dosa was born. Other South Indian regulars such as idlis and uttapams too have a special Udupi touch to them and are decidedly different.
In Karnataka itself, the Malnad region is famous for its distinct cuisine, not to be found elsewhere, even within Karnataka. Kadubus or rice balls are relished here rather than idlis, and akki (rice) rotis preferred over dosas. While Udipi cuisine is pure vegetarian and no garlic or onion is used, Malnad cuisine is an amalgam of Mangalorean and Coorgi cuisine.
Having eaten South Indian food many a times is fine, but the experience of hot appams and puttus being served on a banana leaf in a traditional Kerala homestay is all together different. The cuisine of a place is a reason big enough to travel all the way there to try it if you are particular about original taste. The malvan region in Maharashtra offers delectable Malvani cuisine that seafood lovers will especially enjoy. Try sampling it at restaurants outside malvan, and few will be able to match up to the original.
