Before travelling, safety is the single largest factor that most people think of. While the new age does have its fair share of intrepid travellers, it’s wise to be prepared in the face of adversity.
To keep your belongings safe, distribution is the key. Most people pack all valuables in a small handbag and have to guard it with their life at all times. Though it might work, it can be disastrous if that one handbag is snatched by a mugger and all you’re left with is a bundle of clothes and cosmetics.
Avoid carrying too much cash- use travellers’ cheques or cards instead. If you absolutely have to carry a big amount, divide and stash it in different bags. Keep that big SLR you own in your backpack, and don’t keep peering at it every few seconds. Treat it like a regular clothes bag, and it will not attract much attention.
If on a train, you can always use a chain to lock your luggage. A lot of these problems are elevated if you are traveling solo, and you should carry only what you can manage to take care of by yourself rather than asking fellow passengers. For your own safety, it’s wise to be alert at all times. It’s easier said than done, but you have to be well prepared.
Carry a first-aid kit at all times for any kind of medical emergency and have somebody you can call in such situations on your speed dial. Whenever you reach a city and check in to your accommodation, always find out the whereabouts of the nearest police station and hospital. Though self-defense is the best option, very few of us actually learn karate. A pen knife in your pocket is the next best bet and it can also be used for other things.
Above all, stay calm in all situations- there is always a way out of the stickiest swamp.
