Pondicherry on the east coast of India is a former French colony, evidence of which is visible everywhere. It's about the only city in India where locals will almost speak French as fluently as they would their mother tongue.
Pondicherry is full of beautiful French colonial Architecture, churches and French style avenues. If you are the sorts who look forward to a quiet holiday, you'll enjoy walking down the promenade by the sea also the most popular haunt of the locals for Sunday evenings. Paradise and Serenity Beach are great beaches to visit as is the famous Auroville Ashram. Movement within the ashram is restricted for outsiders but you will enjoy browsing and picking up all the natural, handmade artifacts of Auroville. For those with a streak to explore, hire a bicycle or a bike and enjoy riding around outside the town.
